In the framework of the commemoration of April 4, the International Day of awareness-raising against anti-personnel mines, the organization Mil Victimas del Conflicto, in support of the National Army, will hand over to the magistrates of the Chamber of Truth Recognition of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP in Spanish), the report entitled The Devastation of People: means and methods of illicit warfare used by the Farc.
The report is the result of a rigorous interdisciplinary research involving sociologists, lawyers, experts in explosives, among other professionals, who made a detailed analysis of the development, operation and effects caused by antipersonnel mines and improvised explosive devices used by the Farc during the armed confrontation.
In addition to the technical information regarding the use of mines and IED, the document sets forth the Conventions, Protocols, Conventions, among other instruments of International Law that sanction the use of means and methods that are prohibited in war; in the same way, it analyzes these illegal conducts in the light of the internal criminal law.
It should be noted that this type of unconventional weapons were banned by international law, since they cause excessive damage to their victims, without distinguishing civilians or combatants.
Through the presentation of this report, both the Mil Victimas Organization and the National Army, seek to contribute to the visibility of the military victims of antipersonnel mines and their families, who are the main companions in the arduous process and are not frequently invisible in the process of recovery, both physical and psychological.
Several soldiers who were harmed by these devices will tell the JEP their experiences, before, during and after facing this situation in which 7,413 heroes of the Institution become victims, when they carried out their operation of defending sovereignty and Colombian society.
It is in the same way pertinent to establish the national situation on the consequences suffered by civilians and military, caused by anti-personnel mines, in addition to highlight the important operation carried out daily by the different anti-explosive groups of the National Army to ensure Colombia as a country free of these explosive devices and their disastrous consequences.
