The municipality of El Calvario, located in the Paramo area of the central mountain range, and with a population of 1,700 inhabitants, is today part of the new 12 territories declared free of suspicion of contamination by anti-personnel mines.
In the area that has had four Military Forces victims due to anti-personnel mines, soldiers from the Humanitarian Demining Engineers Battalion No.4 of the National Army, through humanitarian demining tasks, achieved to demined 3.948 m2.
Now more than 450 people of the rural sector who are dedicated to the growing of blackberry, squid, corn, tomato, bean, cane and dairy production, will be able to carry out their activities with security and confidence.
According to Wilson Alférez, the municipal Mayor, the increase in productivity in the agricultural sector would be 40 percent and in the livestock sector 30 percent, due to the reliability of the land without anti-personnel mines.
With this municipality, nine villages are now free from anti-personnel mines in this department.
