In the course of a joint and coordinated operation conducted by the Colombian Navy, the National Army and units of the Judicial Investigation Section –SIJIN (Judicial Police) of the National Police, 18 people were captured in Cartagena and in the municipality of Mahates, Bolívar, accused of belonging to the substructure Héroes del Caribe of the Organized Armed Group (GAO) Clan del Golfo.
The operation was carried out in the municipality of La Boquilla and in the Olaya Herrera and Flor Del Campo districts of Cartagena city; as well as in the municipality of Mahates, where troops of the Bolivar Military Gaula of the Colombian Navy, the Caribbean Military Gaula (Anti-Extortion and Anti-Kidnapping Group) and units of the SIJIN (Judicial Police) arrived, capturing alias El Jhorman, accused to be the main criminal coordinator of the GAO Clan del Golfo in the region.
Alias Bebeto, who was allegedly in charge of coordinating the extortion and selective killing actions of this organization, upon noticing the presence of the authorities, tried to flee by opening fire on the troops, and as a reaction of the soldiers, he was wounded and killed. In the operation, 16 more members of the organization were also captured, who were wanted for crimes such as conspiracy, aggravated homicide, extortion, manufacturing, trafficking and carrying of firearms and ammunition, and trafficking, manufacturing or carrying of drugs. Two more men were notified of their capture at the prison where they are being held.
In the operation, two revolver-type firearms, ten 38-caliber cartridges, communication equipment, and supplies, including camouflaged, pixelated uniforms for the exclusive use of the Public Force, caps with the logo of the Héroes del Caribe AGC front, and 260 kilos of marijuana, which the individuals are presumed to have sold in the sector, were seized. Those captured and the material seized were put into custody of judicial authorities.
