The colombian Navy through the units of the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia continues to work for the preservation of the environment, with the accompaniment in the birth and liberation of more than 2,600 sea turtles, which during the second half of the year carried out their nesting process in the smaller islands, located in north and south of the San Andrés and Providencia islands.
In addition to avoiding the effects of environmental factors such as sun, rain and birds of prey, the tireless work carried out by the men of the Naval Military Police Battalion No. 11 includes the identification, marking and protection of 94 nests and hundreds of turtle eggs on the islands of Cayo de Albuquerque, Bolívar, Serrana, Serranilla and Roncador.
These species, including the Caretta Caretta, commonly known as Bigheaded Turtles, the Eretmochelys Imbricata, known as Hawksbill Turtles, the Chelonya Mydas, known as Green Turtles and the Dermochelys Coriacea, known as Leatherback Turtles, are received annually by personnel of the Naval Institution, who follow up on the nesting process with the support of the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina -CORALINA- and the Sea Turtle Foundation, in an effort to protect the environment of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve.
