As part of Halloween, soldiers gave recognition to Indigenous children in the Colombian Caribbean.
In the municipality of Maicao, La Guajira, 14 boys and girls of the Wayúu Indigenous community were honored by the National Army after demonstrating their great academic commitment during their virtual classes.
These children, during the time of mandatory quarantine and the presence of the COVID-19 in the country, had to move from their face-to-face classes in school classrooms to their education through technological media. Despite the hard transition, their desire to learn has not ceased and they continue day by day to receive the teachings provided by their teachers.
For this reason, the National Army through the Tenth Brigade with the Cavalry Battalion Gustavo Matamoros, the Comprehensive Action and Development Support Battalion No.1 and the Reserve Officials, in coordination with the Indigenous Health Promotion Company Anas Wayuu through its manager Beda Margarita Suárez Aguilar, will give the children a diploma and a medal in recognition for their dedication to the study, and also a biosecurity kit and a basket with sweets to celebrate Halloween; activity that will be carried out under all protective measures to prevent the contagion of the Coronavirus.
Major Cristian Loaiza, commander of the Comprehensive Action and Development Support Battalion No.1, said: “the purpose of this activity is to continue encouraging children to continue studying, in this case, virtually, and to continue taking care of themselves to face COVID-19 to prevent this type of disease in the community."
In the same way, and in order to continue strengthening the bonds of partnership with the indigenous inhabitants, the private third class, Julieth Paola Pushaina Epiayú, of the indigenous community Zahino, a native of the municipality of Barranca, who currently works tirelessly for his community, will tone the notes of the national anthem in Wayuunaiki language, the ancestral language of this territory.
