“We never forget the allies who gave us their help in the most difficult moments, and we always seek to strengthen diplomatic and military cooperation and strengthen relations with the countries that showed their solidarity decades ago, including Colombia." Those were the words of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Korea to Colombia, Mr. Lee Wang Keun.”
With the purpose of exalting the effort and devotion of the 5,314 Colombian soldiers and sailors who were part of the defense, in the name of our homeland, in the Korean War, the General Command of the Military Forces held a military ceremony as an act of gratitude to the heroes of Colombia, at the Colombia Battalion, who 72 years ago fulfilled the institutional mission with heroism and selflessness.
The commemoration was held at the Pagoda Monument at the General Rafael Reyes Prieto Superior War College. It was chaired by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral José Joaquín Amézquita García, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Korea to Colombia, Lee Wang Keun.
During the ceremony, a wreath laying was made as a testimony of respect and in tribute to the military who responded to the call of the UN, representing Colombia, as the only country in Latin America that supported South Korea in the confrontation of the 50s, demonstrating the commitment and spirit of sacrifice and service that the Colombian soldier represents.
With this solemn tribute, the Military Forces remind with deep respect the group of courageous men who wore their uniform with honor in battles in support of the sister nation of Korea for freedom and democracy.
