In the framework of the Military and Police Operation Esparta, troops of the Vulcano Task Force in coordination with the National Police, achieved in the rural area of the municipality of Tibú, in the department of Norte de Santander, captured of alias 'William', 'Manuel' and 'Chicote', alleged perpetrators and brains of the murder of the candidate for mayor of Tibú, Mr. Bernardo Betancourt, on September 15, 2019.
The military operation was carried out after an arduous and thorough military intelligence work carried out in the urban area of the municipality of La Gabarra, municipality of Tibú, where these three individuals belonging to the Residual Organized Armed Group 33, residual GAO 33, allegedly carried out criminal operations against civilians.
According to military intelligence, alias ‘William’, with 9 years in the criminal structure, would be responsible for coordinating and giving the order to kill the candidate in the presence of his wife.
This man was in the same way apparently the leader of the residual Terrorism Support Network 33 of this GAO in the Catatumbo region.
In the same way, according to his criminal record alias 'William', is accused of committing, accompanied by alias 'Manuel' and alias 'Chicote' selective killings in the municipality of La Gabarra, as well as to “charge” extortion to merchants and guilds of the municipality of Tibú.
Troops of the Artillery Battalion No. 30 'Batalla de Cúcuta', arrived at a house in the urban area of La Gabarra, where alias 'William', 'Manuel' and 'Chicote' were captured.
The apprehended were taken by air to the city of Cúcuta and put into custody of the authorities.
