Reaffirming the environmental commitment of the San Andres and Providencia Specific Command with the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, it was possible to release 325 sea turtles on the Roncador Island, 120 nautical miles from San Andrés Island.
Sea turtles of the Hawksbill type are monitored and protected by the Naval Military Police Battalion No.11, who monitor each of the nests for the optimal birth of these turtles that could return to their habitat, with the necessary conditions for their growth, survival and development.
Hawksbill sea turtles have been classified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature - IUCN, as critically endangered, due to human fishing practices and consumption of their eggs by predators.
During 2019 the Specific Command of San Andrés y Providencia achieved the release of 3,905 turtles of different types in the islands of Bolívar, Albuquerque, Serrana, Serranilla, Roncador and Providencia.
