In 2021, in the subregion of Urabá in Antioquia, Cordoba and Chocó, 40 illegal drug laboratories belonging to the organized armed group, GAO, Clan del Golfo, have been destroyed.
Troops of the seventeenth Brigade, unit of the Seventh Division of the National Army, in coordination with the police and the Attorney General's office, and in response to the recommendations of the control agencies, dismantled a laboratory in the municipality of Unguía Medio, in Unguía, Department of Chocó, which generated illegal profits to the Efrén Vargas Gutiérrez substructure of the organized armed group, Gao, Clan del Golfo, exceeding 200 million pesos per month.
Abundant liquid and solid precursors used for the production of coca paste were found by troops at the site. Around this laboratory there is evidence of serious environmental damage caused by deforestation for the planting of illicit plants, as well as pollution in the soil and water sources due to the dumping of chemicals and precursors for the production of coca base paste.
