Within the framework of this United Nations conference, strategies for the protection of sea and river ecosystems will be presented, including pollution control and illegal fishing, the conservation of protected areas and the response to natural disasters.
The participation of the Naval Institution in the COP16 highlights its commitment to sustainability and the importance of international collaboration in the defense of the environment.
The Colombian Navy, within the framework of the United Nations Summit on Biodiversity – COP16, is present not only in the frame of its security role in the territories, working so that locals and tourists enjoy this great event, but in the same way presents its fundamental role in the protection and conservation of sea and river ecosystems, which are essential for biodiversity and the sustainability of the country.
Protecting the sea environment is not only a responsibility, but a comprehensive part of the mission of the National Navy, which, through various naval operations and enhanced human talent, implements effective strategies to safeguard the seas and rivers of Colombia.
During COP16, the Naval Institution will present its efforts in key areas, such as:
- Sea pollution control: operations to mitigate the impact of maritime activities that threaten the quality of waters.
- Control of illegal fishing: permanent surveillance to combat unregulated fishing, ensuring the sustainability of sea resources and the well-being of coastal communities in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
- Protection of sea areas: constant monitoring to promote the conservation of critical habitats for sea flora and fauna, through different projects and scientific expeditions.
- Protection of fauna and flora: throughout military operations to surveillance in protected areas as well as patrols, ensuring the conservation of endangered specimens and their habitats, in the face of different threats.
- Water resource protection: strategies to work to increase the quality and sustainability of water resources in rivers and seas.
- Support in natural disasters: rapid and coordinated interventions to provide support in environmental emergencies and natural disasters, strengthening the resilience of the disturbed communities, as was the case of Hurricane Iota in the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.
This operation of the Naval Institution not only underlines its responsibility towards environmental conservation, but in the same way the importance of inter-institutional collaboration and joint work with international people, to face current environmental challenges.
The Colombian Navy, during COP16, reaffirms its commitment to the protection of natural resources, integrating sustainability into each of its operations and understanding that being custodians of the environment is essential for the future of the nation, the planet and future generations.
