Crew of the Colombian Navy and the General Maritime Directorate –DIMAR - worked jointly with departmental authorities and a volunteer of divers of San Andrés, to carry out an underwater cleaning activity in which they collected two tons of solid waste of the seabed of the coastal area of San Andres Island; it is waste left mostly after the transit of hurricanes IOTA and Eta.
The Naval Institution accompanied by members of State bodies and certified divers of the island, came together to start this activity of well-being for the environment. The cleanup was carried out in the West View sector, and extended to surrounding areas, where civilian and military divers conducted dives to extract of the depths this waste that harms the health of the oceans.
This important initiative of the Port Authority No.7 of San Andrés, leads to materialize the coordinated work conducted by the components of the specific command of San Andrés and Providencia and the public and private sector, in order to protect biodiversity and generate awareness on the importance of taking care of the animals and conservation of the sea ecosystem.
“It has been a joint work. Thanks to the Navy and the Navy divers in the same way for the tremendous collaboration and the commitment they are showing at this time, not only for the department but in the same way for the environment and the underwater part of the Archipelago,” said Leonardo Muñoz Arcos, leader of Ocean House, diving school participant in the activity.
This important activity aimed at the preservation of the Biosphere Reserve Seaflower took place thanks to the coordinated work conducted by the maritime authorities and the government of San Andres, National Army, CORALINA, Red Cross, Civil Defense Colombian, Decameron Hotels, Solar, Hotels & Resorts, Is Pride Scuba, Social Action of the Navy, Corales de Paz, Eco Divers, among other diving schools on the Island.
