In compliance with biosecurity protocols, commemorative events were held in honor of the heroes of the Colombian Navy, who 25 years ago lost their lives at the hands of members of fronts 35 and 57 of the extinct Farc. Solemn Eucharistic acts and a wreath laying ceremony were accompanied by the community and local authorities in this recognition to the men of the Naval institution.
The commemoration that was presided over by the lieutenant colonel of Navy Camilo Andr茅s P茅rez Cifuentes, Commander of the Battalion that bears the name of this heroes of the homeland, was made on the road between El Salado and El Carmen de Bolivar, in Bolivar, in the exact place, where the August 28, 1995, Colonel Persand, lost his life and the lieutenant of the navy, Tony Pastrana Contreras, and the volunteer Sixto Marble Cueto, died in an attack perpetrated by the former guerrillas of the Farc.
In 1995, Colonel Alfredo Persand Barnes served as commander of the No.5 and on the day of his death he was in the municipality of El Salado, leading the evacuation of a family that had received threats of the guerrillas, when on the way they were ambushed by men of fronts 35 and 57 of the extinct Farc. Upon hearing the news of the death of his commander, the Navy Lieutenant Tony Pastrana went to the ambush site, but on the way he was in the same way vilely attacked and lost his life.
These three men are examples of the dedication and sacrifice of our navy men for the consolidation of the Montes de Mar铆a, where today they continue to watch for the safety and good physical condition of their inhabitants.
