These results are possible thanks to the coordinated work conducted by the Colombian Navy with environmental authorities such as the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Valle del Cauca and the Environmental Public Establishment.
Individuals who are caught doing this type of activities without the legal documents could incur the crime of “Illicit use of renewable natural resources,” in accordance with the provisions of article 328 of the Colombian Criminal Code, which contains penalties of up to 135 months in prison and 43 750 legal minimum salary in force.
During three operations of the Colombian Navy against environmental crimes, carried out in different places in the departments of Chocó and Valle del Cauca, it was possible to find 880 cubic meters of wood such as guabo, manteco, cuangare and sajo.
The first operation was carried out near the estuary of San Antonio, rural area of Buenaventura, where information provided by officials of the Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca (CVC), led the troops of the Navy of Colombia to detect two rudimentary boats that had 1,500 pieces of wood. At the time of the inspection there were not the documents to demonstrate the legality of the material that was transported.
The second operation was carried out near the sea buoy of Buenaventura, where in the framework of surveillance and control of the units of the Naval Force of the Pacific, there was a boat carrying 80 cubic metres of wood, without the necessary documents to prove the legal possession of the cargo.
During the third operation, carried out in the García Gómez sector of the municipality of Litoral del San Juan - Department of Chocó, 184 cubic meters of wood were found by troops that were transported by a boat on the San Juan River, without the documents required by law for the transportation of this type of material.
