Crews of the Colombian Navy and Soldiers of the National Army participated in the distribution of 300 baskets of food donated by the MercaZ Supermarket, benefiting more than 1,100 people who live in one of the most vulnerable sectors of the urban area of Tumaco, in Nariño.
Fishing and informal sales on El Morro de Tumaco beach are the main source of income for families living in the San Felipe neighborhood, on El Morro Island. With the order of mandatory preventive isolation as a measure to counteract the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the country, these people have been economically disadvantaged, since by staying at home, they have no way to generate daily sustenance for their food.
Aware of this social situation and with the purpose of helping those who need it most, efforts were coordinated by the Military Forces and the private sector, managing to distribute basic elements to 300 families, which will led them to subsist during these days of preventive isolation. In the same way, in the coming days, the donation of more humanitarian aid is planned for the most vulnerable neighborhoods of the district.
During the distribution, the infantrymen and MercaZ representatives reminded the inhabitants of this area of the preventive sanitary measures such as washing hands, social distancing and the use of protection elements such as face masks, in case of presenting symptoms associated with the virus. In the same way, they gave them a message of hope, under the premise that containing the expansion of the Coronavirus in Colombia is everyone's job and together we can achieve it.
The inhabitants, mostly children and older adults, thanked the Colombian Navy, the National Army and MercaZ for this gesture, in the same way expressing their gratitude to the Military Forces for taking care of them permanently.
