The informal border crossings with Brazil cover 656 kilometers in limits with Vaupés, an extensive geography mostly jungle and covered by three large tributaries used as strategic routes to get the hallucinogen out of the country.
There are seven informal crossings guarded by more than 150 soldiers of the Thirty-First Army Brigade in the department of Vaupés.
The cachiveras or raudales are points in the course of the Vaupés River, in which the water flows with great speed and force, facilitate the mobility of drug trafficking. So the commander of the Fourth Division, Major General Antonio María Beltrán, traveled to Mitú, to verify the operations and intensify the search for those who act in the service of this crime.
The responsibility for security is led by a group of soldiers who carry out checks on the rio Uaupés, one of the main tributaries of the rio Negro, being the largest river in the Amazon river, to the north of the department, the river Papunaua and the rio Apaporis to the south of the Amazon, a tributary of the Caquetá river (Japurá in Brazil), which passes through the departments of Guaviare, Caquetá, Vaupés and Amazonas, being a route used by organized armed groups to take overseas drug trafficking.
The Puerto Calvo sector is a busy and mandatory place in the urban area of the capital city of Vaupés, for the control of boats. This year, illegal timber from indiscriminate logging has been found at that site, a problem which is already visible in some points of the jungle.
It is not an easy task, but it is in the same way not impossible for these brave soldiers trained to support a large part of the department, especially the indigenous communities composed of 27 ethnic groups, including Cubeo, yurutí, Tukano, Siriano and piratapuyo.
Since the installation of the Brigade in 2009 and just 15 minutes from the municipal center of Mitú, these soldiers have sponsored the Mituseño Urania indigenous people, benefiting about 50 families, as well as others, including Bocas del Yi and Santa Marta, and, in the municipality of Carurú, they have been carrying humanitarian aid, recreational and medical activities.
Being a department that is supplied mainly by the inflow of river merchandise, it in the same way receives hundreds of tourists who arrive at Fabio Alberto León Bentley Airport to get to know its culture and its ancestral wealth.
The National Army continues to support operations and carries operations in the protection of the people with more than 1,400 soldiers for the Democracy Plan of this June 19, as it works for the normal development of the second round of the presidential elections.
