Thanks to an initiative led by the Colombian Navy through the Caribbean Naval Force and the Professional Officers of the Naval Reserve, the Mayor's Office of Cartagena and its Social Emergency Plan together with the Municipal Unit of Agricultural Technical Assistance - Umata, and the Center for Transfer, Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the University of Cartagena, more than 50 farmers and agricultural enterprises of the Caribbean region benefited with the marketing of their products.
On this occasion, more than eight tons of fruits, vegetables and tubers such as papaya, mango, onion, chili pepper, potato, yam, yucca, among many others, agricultural products of the Caribbean region, were marketed, leaving a profit of more than 16 million pesos to these peasants, including three women family householders, mothers of navy men who died in the line of duty in the framework of military operations.
With this type of initiatives, economic development is promoted in the rural communities of the Colombian Caribbean, helping farmers to sell their harvest, contributing directly to the preservation of the cultural identity of the region and the promotion of sustainable consumption habits, strengthening the rural economy and small producers.
More than eight tons of agricultural products were sold in the second edition of peasant food markets
During the activity, hundreds of attendees were provided with fresh and nutritious food, directly brought from the lands and provided without intermediaries. They in the same way enjoyed other typical samples of the gastronomy and culture of the Caribbean region such as sweets and handicrafts.
The Colombian Navy, through the Caribbean Naval Force, will continue to make its differential resources available to the communities in this region of the country in order to contribute to the security and social, economic and cultural development of the inhabitants of this important region of the country, while inviting public and private companies of the country to join this type of activities that seek to improve the conditions and standard of living of peasants and their families.
