The figure corresponds to humanitarian demining work in the Departments of Valle del Cauca, Cauca and Nariño during 2020.
Through manual, mechanical and canine demining techniques, soldiers of the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion No.6 decontaminated 257,754 square meters of southwestern Colombia suspected of anti-personnel mines.
During the course of the year, mine clearance specialists destroyed ten anti-personnel mines, five unexploded ordnance and two improvised explosive devices, saving the lives of hundreds of people in Nariño, Cauca and Valle del Cauca.
Similarly, they presented the municipalities of La Sierra and San Sebastián, in the Department of Cauca, and in Nariño, Linares and Túquerres, as Territories free of suspected contamination.
For the outgoing commander, lieutenant colonel Andrés Rojas Rojas, the operation was very gratifying, “humanitarian demining is a mission where the soldiers of Colombia, through the decontamination of the fields, are returning the joy to the families to be able to grow and walk on their lands. The support of the inhabitants was essential to carried out our work,” the officer emphasized.
Demining operations will continue in this region and will be led by Lieutenant Colonel Danilo Chaparro Chaparro, who took over as the new demining battalion commander.
