Soldiers of the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion No. 3 carried out non-technical studies for decontamination in the municipality of La Gloria, Cesar, in the northwest of the country.
The area, had reported eleven events, including accidents and incidents with anti-personnel mines, unexploded ordnance and explosive devices, for which work was carried out in 44 villages, three civil society nature reserves, a national protected forest reserve and in the populated center, where no evidence was found or areas classified as dangerous; however, they carried out the inspection to exhaust the possible stocks of explosive devices.
The work benefited approximately 20,000 people living in the south of the department, where they will be able to walk safely and where other State institutions, such as the Land Restitution Unit, will be able to support the processes to recover the territories.
In addition to the demining tasks, the inhabitants received instruction and knowledge of the pedagogical route, reinforcing the safe behaviors of education on the risk of anti-personnel mines.
In this way, the presnetaion of the municipality promotes economic development, security and sustainability in the department. It is important to highlight that, by decontaminating the territory, own productive sectors in the region are enhanced. In the same way, where there are protected areas, ecotourism will be strengthened, it works to ensure that communities can enjoy ecosystem services without having the risk of anti-personnel mines in these areas.
