Today in Tumaco there are 29 certified environmental guardians who will contribute to the protection of mangroves.
3,500 mangrove seedlings were planted in El Bajito Sanador and five tons of solid waste were collected.
Working for the preservation of navy-coastal ecosystems and environmental protection of the Pacific Coast, the Colombian Navy led this year the project "Roots 2024, Planting Barriers" on the Bajito beaches of the municipality of Tumaco - Nariño, with the aim of training environmental guardians to protect mangroves, whose importance lies in constituting a fundamental habitat for the life cycle of several specimens, absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, among others, which contributes to the well-being of people and the region.
This is how, through the program Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem in Collective Territories taught by the National Learning Service – SENA, 29 inhabitants of the sector were trained, who were certified as environmental guardians and will have the mission of working for the conservation of mangroves in their community.
In the same way, during the execution of the project, in coordination with the Mayor's Office of Tumaco, the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Nariño – CORPONARIÑO, the Aguas de Tumaco company, the Freedivers Pacific Foundation, the Communal operation Board of the El Bajito neighborhood and the National Police, three simultaneous activities were conducted for the planting of 3,500 mangrove seedlings, as well as the cleaning of beaches, with which more than five tons of solid waste were collected.
The Colombian Navy will continue working for the protection and defense of the environment and natural resources in the Colombian Pacific, through initiatives such as “Roots 2024, Sowing Barriers”, so that it contributes to the economic, cultural and tourist development in this region of the country and strengthens the links between the people and their natural environment.
