So far this year, 224 people have been safeguarded in the Archipelago department.
As part of maritime control and surveillance activities, the Colombian Navy rescued eight Venezuelan migrants, six adults and two minors, who had reportedly been abandoned on the Cayo Pescador Albuquerque Island, 25 nautical miles southwest of the island of San Andrés.
A Rapid Reaction Unit of the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés arrived at the scene of the events, to carry out the initial review of the health status of these people and transfer them to a safe dock, where they were put into custody of the authorities to carry out the relevant procedures. The minors, for their part, were handed over to the Colombian Family Wellbeing Institute - ICBF for the restoration of their rights.
It should be noted that this is the second case reported during the year in which irregular migrants are abandoned in this sector of the department. Additionally, the Colombian Caribbean island region is facing adverse weather conditions, as a result of the formation of a tropical cyclone alert; a situation that triggers winds of approximately 37 km/h, as well as the increase in the height of the waves and storms that make navigation difficult, which puts at risk the lives of those who make use of unauthorized boats.
