The palm bear or anteater is a large animal, which is currently on the red list of threatened specimens of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, given that a high number of local extinctions have been reported. This mammal was sponsored by the Air Combat Command No. 2 being one of the animals that lives in the Unit, with the firm commitment to preserve wildlife.
The giant anteater or palm bear is a representative mammal specimen of America, known for its long trunk and tongue of up to 60 cm, which it uses to feed on ants and termites. It is part of the superorder Xenarthra, which groups together all the armadillos, sloths and anteaters.
For its protection, the awareness is carried out to all the personnel of the Air Base indicating its importance, advantages and the risk it faces due to the decrease of its number of specimens. Soldiers are told, in case of finding it, to not approach nor bother it, because, although it is of a very calm temperament, when it feels attacked or cornered, it could defend itself with its imposing claws, which would represent a great risk.
Wildlife is of enormous importance for both people and the environment, as it is a fundamental natural resource that contributes to the maintenance of forests and ecological ecosystem health.
The Colombian Aerospace Force is committed to preserving natural resources, preventing, mitigating and compensating the environmental impacts generated within the framework of its mission, working for the continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System, through campaigns that lead the conservation of the planet.
