The Colombian Navy carried out the evacuation of a pregnant minor belonging to the indigenous Yaguas people, near the Island Los Micos, about an hour of the municipality of Leticia, Amazonas. She had contractions, beginning her labor, without medical assistance nearby.
The humanitarian assistance operation began once the call for help by the community was received. Immediately, the Amazon Coast Guard Group deployed a rapid reaction unit on the Amazon River, which transported the 16-year-old girl from her town by the Colombian national navy with her companion, to the capital city of the Amazonas for medical assistance on a priority basis.
The coordinated work conducted by the indigenous authorities and the Colombian Navy led to the timely transfer of the minor, who gave birth without complications in the Hospital, where together with the newborn are in optimal health conditions.
The indigenous Yaguas people have approximately 360 members (according to figures of the Ministry of Culture). They have their own worldview and beliefs. Their economy revolves around the traditional activities of hunting, fishing and gathering of wild fruits, and selling of skins and meat.
