The Submarine ARC Tayrona of the Colombian Navy arrived at the Mayport - Florida Naval Station in the United States to be part of the twelfth Operation DESI (Diesel Electric Submarine Initiative) 2022.
Since May 19 of this year, the class 209 submarine, manufactured at the Kiel shipyards (Germany), sailed to participate in this international operation, where it interacted for 72 days with different war units of the Navies of the United States, Italy and Brazil, leading the exchange of experiences in the use of Resources of the air and afloat units of the participating countries, before the threat posed by a diesel submarine.
Operation Diesel Electric Submarine Initiative (DESI) is an initiative conducted by the United States and South American countries with conventional attack submarines, which leads to maintaining a high standard of training conducted by the different Navies. It should be noted that since 2004 Colombia has been participating in this Operation, this being the twelfth representation of our country.
On this occasion, exercises were carried out to test the operational capacity of the Colombian sailors, carrying out evasive and escape maneuvers, silent navigation and special operations. It is important to highlight the realization, for the first time, of an aeromedical evacuation exercise to strengthen the skills of the crews in rescue procedures.
During the operation, this important unit of the Colombian Navy conducted hand-in-hand training with strategic units of the participating Navies, including: the Aircraft Carrier USS George H.W. Bush belonging to Destroyer Squadron No. 26 of the United States Navy, the Destroyer ITS Caio Duilio of the Italian Navy, the USS Oregon, a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy, and the submarine BNS Tikuna of the Brazilian Navy.
It should be noted that the ARC Tayrona executed Unit Composed Training Exercises (COMPTUEX), a maneuver that leads to generating a challenging operational environment, with the mission of finding, neutralizing and defeating hostile underwater forces that pose a threat.
