The cargo was found in the Acandí, Playón and Playona Wildlife Sanctuary, a sea protected area where fishing activities are prohibited.
Thanks to the information provided by the people and members of National Natural Parks, a Rapid Reaction Unit – URR of the Colombian Navy, seized more than 50 kilograms of illegal fishing in the Acandí, Playón and Playona Wildlife Sanctuary, in the department of Chocó.
The Colombian sailors found and stopped a ship that was fishing in this sea protected area, so they transferred it to the dock of the Coast Guard Station of Urabá, where crew members of the Naval Institution and the National Authority of Aquaculture and Fisheries – AUNAP, carried out the relevant review and inventory of the material that was on board.
As a result of the, 20 kilograms of shrimp, 30 kilograms of Chinese snapper and four kilograms of barbul were found by troops, as well as fishing items. The cargo was put into custody of the AUNAP.
It should be noted that Colombia has signed the Convention on Biological Diversity and has a National System of Protected Areas – SINAP, consisting of national, regional, local and private areas, including the Acandí, Playón and Playona Wildlife Sanctuary, made up of 90% sea ecosystems, so it is constituted as the habitat for the reproduction of important protected specimens.
