The finding was made within the framework of the operations of fishing activities and environmental regulations, carried out permanently by the Naval Institution.
Units of the Colombian Navy attached to the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia reported the finding of 35 kilograms of shovel snail. The fishing was being extracted illegally in Cayo Serrana Island on Colombian territorial sea by a foreign ship.
This result is given in an operation in the Caribbean Sea, where the ARC Caldas Missile Frigate detected and intercepted a fishing boat named Capt Dervin of Nicaraguan flag, at the moment when its crew was fishing on the island of Cayo Serrana.
The boat, as it did not have fishing permits demanded by the Colombian maritime authority, was escorted by the Naval Institution unit, along with its five crew members, to the dock of the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés.
Once in a safe port, in coordination with the Ministry of Health of San Andrés, the Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina - CORALINA, the crew's health check was carried out and a detailed inspection of the ship was carried out, finding inside 35 kilograms of shovel snail, a closed specimen.
The foreign personnel was put into custody of the Attorney General's Office, allegedly for the crimes such as illegal fishing and illegal exploitation of renewable natural resources. In the same way, the operation was attended by the Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries which ordered the protection of the shovel snail specimen, since the fishing of nine tons authorized for the year 2023 was completed.
On the other hand, unauthorized fishing gear equipment, as well as semi-autonomous diving equipment and air compressors were put into custody of the Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries of San Andrés and Providencia and CORALINA. The boat was put into custody of the Directorate of National Taxes and Customs - DIAN.
