The Sailors of Colombia, custodians of the environment, in fulfillment of the mission of ensuring the protection and conservation of natural resources in the Colombian Caribbean, obtained the finding of 18.2 cubic meters of native wood of the region, thanks to the surveillance work of the crew of the Coast Guard Station of Urabá.
In two operations carried out at the Punta Las Vacas Maritime Checkpoint in Turbo – Antioquia, the Coast Guard crew members found inconsistencies in the documentation for the transport of two specimens of timber, which were transported on board two boats.
In the first of them, 260 rods corresponding to 3.9 cubic meters of red mangrove were found by troops, a protected specimen that was being transported by five individuals without having the Unified National Online Safe-Conduct (SUNL) for its transportation.
It should be noted that the use of protected specimens is prohibited because they are in a state of vulnerability or threat due to their decline in the ecosystem, mainly associated with an overexploitation of their wood.
The second boat type chalupa, manned by three individuals, transported 14.3 cubic meters of wood specimen melina, without the safe conduct or the current documentation sought by the corresponding environmental authorities.
The boats were immobilized and, together with the material, were put into custody of the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the Urabá – CORPOURABÁ, which proceeded to the preventive apprehension of both cargoes. The personnel were put into custody of the National Police.
The Colombian Navy continues to work for the protection of the environment, countering all illegal activities that threaten natural resources, in order to preserve ecosystems and protect the whole territory of the Colombian Caribbean.
