In the framework of Operation Artemisa, the Colombian Navy, together with the National Army and Corpoamazonia, released two caimans of the animal Caiman Crocodilus, known in the region as white crocodiles or spectacled caimans, in the sector of the Island of los Micos in the department of Amazonas.
The animals measuring two meters and 50 centimeters, were transported aboard a Rapid Reaction Unit of the Amazon Coast Guard Group, to a remote area of the community, being released into the waters of the Amazon River, thus reincorporating them to their natural habitat.
The caimans were found by troops in the facilities of the military complex of the Colombian Air Force in Leticia-Amazonas, who gave notice to Corpoamazonia to carry out the rescue work, the health status review and their subsequent release.
The white crocodiles are animals of aquatic habits in the rivers of the Colombian Amazon and Brazil. According to environmental authorities, they are evasive with a tendency to hide when they feel in danger. In the region, these animals are hunted to market their skin or for the consumption of their meat, an illegal activity that puts at risk the conservation of the Amazon ecosystem.
