Rescue of fishermen in San Andres
The timely reaction of the Specific Command of San Andres and Providencia of the Colombian Navy, led to the rescue of two fishermen who traveled in a rudimentary boat called 'Ice Black' 11 nautical miles, south of the island of San Andr茅s.
The alert was originated by a call via VHF by the ship, which said it was drifting, due to the loss of the single motor of the motorboat. Immediately, a Rapid Reaction Unit of the San Andres Coast Guard Station initiated a search and rescue operation, which led to the discovery of the two Colombian fishermen, 42 and 46, who were found in optimal health. Subsequently, the motorboat was towed to the San Andres Coast Guard Station.
During the course of 2019, the Navy of Colombia through the Specific Command of San Andr茅s y Providencia rescued 55 people, thanks to the execution of successful search and rescue operations, while inviting citizens to continue reporting any emergency in telephone line 146 or VHF channel 16.
The San Andres y Providencia Specific Command calls on the community to take safety measures and follow the following recommendations to prevent accidents during this holiday seasons:
1. The navigation recommendations and restrictions made by the Colombian Maritime Authority must be followed.
2. Keep informed about the situation in which the keys of Acuario, Haynes Cay and Johnny Cay are, when you want to make a visit or stop near them. The staff of the General Maritime Directorate daily conducts inspection and evaluation of the keys, issuing a situation report, announcing conditions and restrictions.
3. Always wear the life jacket, regardless of the distance of the journey to be made.
4. Always, and as far as possible, carry communication equipment in case of emergency.
