Two tons of solid waste were taken of the sea during an underwater cleaning activity carried out by divers of the Colombian Navy in the northern area of Manzanillo Island, in the Bay of Cartagena.
A group of 13 military officers, including nine officer divers, of the Naval Cadet School 'Almirante Padilla', submerged up to 33 feet (10 meters) deep to remove tires, plastic and glass bottles, hoses and other solid waste, product of human activity, which reach the coast dragged by the current.
This activity is part of the Biodiversity program of the Environmental Management Plan of the Naval School of Cadets, which seeks to protect the sea life of the Bay of Cartagena.
“The Colombian Navy is a national leader in this type of environmental activities. What we want is that all those coastal and riverside communities become aware and help to respect, care for and positively impact the environment, specifically the sea environment of the Bay of Cartagena”, said Major of the Navy Infantry José Javier Contreras Rangel, diver and Commander of the School Officers Course.
