Today, 19 July, the celebration of the Day of the Heroes of the Nation and their Families takes place as an act preliminary to the commemoration of the anniversary of the Independence of Colombia, with the purpose to recognize and exalt the courage and bravery of the military and police officers, who have sacrificed their lives for the safety and well-being of the people of Colombia, as well as those that are currently in compliance with the institutional mission.
The ceremony will be presided over by the Minister of Defense, Diego Molano Aponte, and accompanied by the Military and Police High Commanders, who will honor all the heroes of the Military Forces and the National Police fallen and wounded in compliance with constitutional duty.
In the same way, their families will be honored, they are the fundamental support of the members of the Military Forces. This tribute is paid to their memory and it is made by half-mast hoisting the national tricolor flag in the different military units. This activity in the same way is carried out as part of the recognition of the operation conducted by the soldiers of land, sea, air and river, as well as members of the National Police that day-to-day work tirelessly for the security of the colombian people, and in particular to thank the families of these heroes, who with their support, understanding and unconditional support strengthen their commitment and dedication to the service of the Homeland.
The preservation of peace is a right and a duty of all Colombians, but the members of the Military Forces have made this their reason for being and their commitment to the Colombian Nation. It is the occasion to reiterate the commitment of the General Command of the Military Forces to the memory of those who, in favor of the national wellbeing, have sacrificed their lives and part of their bodies to defend national values; they will be remembered as heroes throughout history for their selflessness and dedication.
