In addition to medical personnel and specialized rescuers, Surface Units, Coast Guard, Navy and an ambulance of the Colombian Navy participated in this evacuation in a synchronized manner.
The Colombian Navy managed to safeguard the life of an injured Colombian fisherman, after being bitten by a shark in Caribbean Sea waters near Cayo Quitasue帽o. This person was evacuated from Providencia to San Andr茅s thanks to the different means of the Naval Institution.
The 38-year-old fisherman suffered the incident while fishing with the crew of the rudimentary boat Wicked. His companions, upon noticing the emergency, transported the wounded man aboard the boat to the oceanographic ship ARC Providencia that was in the area carrying out scientific studies within the framework of the Seaflower Plus 2021 Expedition.
Once they arrived on this ship, the crew of the General Maritime Directorate-DIMAR-provided timely assistance to the fisherman with the necessary first aid to stop the bleeding, and stabilize the patient and heal the wound suffered in his left leg because of the shark bite.
Once the facts were known, a Rapid Reaction Unit-URR-of the Providencia Coast Guard Station immediately was deployed to the location of the ship in order to transport the native fisherman in a timely manner to the main pier of Providencia, to be assisted by medical personnel of the Colombian Navy, the Colombian National Army and the Colombian Civil Defense.
Simultaneously, a Naval Aviation helicopter and a National Army doctor, who assisted the fisherman during the emergency, were established at the Providencia airport to evacuate the fisherman to the Island of San Andr茅s, where he was received by an assistance team that transported him in a Colombian Navy ambulance to the Clarence Lynd Newball Memorial hospital, in order to provide him with specialized medical assistance.
