The Colombian Navy, in coordination with environmental institutions of the city of Santa Marta, carried out a cleaning activity in the Manzanares River and beaches around its mouth to the Caribbean Sea.
Thanks to a coordinated effort conducted by the crew of the Santa Marta Primary Coast Guard Station and members of the National Army, the Civil Defense, the Santa Marta Public Service Company (ESSMAR), Aseo T茅cnico de la Sabana (ATESA), the Akwamare foundation and the Fishermen's Association, different kinds of waste such as cans, plastic elements, bottles, among others, were collected.
Once the distribution and weigh of the material was verified, the activity culminated with 12 tons of garbage collected, ending an encouraging activity for the ecosystem and ecotourism of the city. The extracted material was stored in garbage bags, which were taken to the city's landfills.
With this activity, the Santa Marta Primary Coast Guard Station generated a positive social, economic, tourist and environmental impact, taking into account the multiple benefits that this entails for the ecosystem, the environment in this area of the Pearl of America.
