Surface units, Coastguards and naval aircraft from eleven countries gathered in operation Event Horizon 2024.
With the Caribbean Sea as the protagonist space, the Colombian Navy, through units of the Caribbean Naval Force, participated in operation Event Horizon 2024, a multinational naval training exercise that brought together the resources of eleven countries, with the purpose of strengthening interoperability against transnational crime and in disaster response.
On board the missile frigate ARC Almirante Padilla, the Colombian Navy carried out a combined work with the Jamaican Defense Force, the host country of the exercise, in the common zone established by Colombia and Jamaica since 1993, to carry out control exercises focused on countering maritime crimes, protecting the environment and safeguarding human life at sea.
With the support of a surface unit of the Dominican Republic and an aircraft of the Netherlands, the Colombian Navy and the Jamaican Defense Force exchanged information, knowledge and resources through the training of each of their crews, with the aim of increasing efficiency in operations against illegal fishing, irregular migration, narcotics and firearms trafficking, as well as search and rescue operations and humanitarian assistance.
During the 14 days of the operation, which included land, sea and air environments, the Navies of Canada, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, the Coast Guard services of Haiti and the Netherlands, and the Defense Forces of the Bahamas, Belize, Costa Rica, Cayman Islands, Turcos and Caicos Islands and Jamaica, deployed their resources with ships, and boarding and patrol boats, aircraft, rapid reaction units and a driven human talent, executing combat exercises and supporting the inhabitants.
The Event Horizon 2024 operation becomes the spearhead for interoperability in the region, because in addition to leading the standardization of doctrine among the naval and aeronautical units of the Caribbean countries, it strengthens the knowledge of the maritime domain and the implementation of national and international maritime legislation, as well as works for the promotion of comprehensive maritime security and also improving communication channels.
“This exercise is a great opportunity for us as the Colombian Navy, since it raises the level of preparedness and interoperability among the participating countries to better respond to the needs of eventual natural disaster situations, as well as maritime interception operations aimed at countering the different threats at sea,” said the Commander of the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, Rear Admiral Carlos Hernando Oramas Maldonado.
