Bolivar. With a memorable ceremonial act, the XXVIII Inter-American Naval Conference, with the participation of 18 Navy Commanders of the Hemisphere, successfully concluded.
For five days, the Commanders met at the Convention Center of Cartagena to discuss the different problems that currently exist in the maritime and fluvial environment, due to common threats that harm the region and influence in national and transnational security.
The central subject of this version was the responsibility of the Navies of the Region against drug trafficking, on which strategies of interaction to be conducted by the navies and Coast Guard bodies were proposed fight against the transnational criminal organizations.
In the same way, the experiences of the Navies were shared in view of the defies and challenges that could arise, as in the case of the submarine ARA "San Juan" in Argentina, which led to unify and strengthen the Navies, in favor of strengthen the ties of partnership and solidarity in the region.
"It is about strengthening the position of the institution in the maritime and fluvial issues, nationally and internationally, being participants in the protection of maritime interests, seeking to take advantage of the sea for the benefit of the Nation, denying its use to the enemy, and strengthening the authority of the institutions and the rule of law. We strengthen ties with the countries of the hemisphere, to work in a coordinated manner, especially to increase operational efforts in the fight against drug trafficking, and any crime or threat at sea, promoting greater and better integration and in parallel, promoting Colombia as a maritime country", mentioned in the framework of the event, Mr. Admiral Ernesto Durán González, Commander of the National Navy.
On the other hand, and in order to increase and improve interoperability at sea, some recommendations were established in science and technology, maritime traffic control, telecommunications, as well as best practices in leadership and academic and professional areas.
With the lessons learned in this event and commitments established in this version, next December the secretariat of the Organization of the XXIX Inter-American Naval Conference will be granted to the Navy of Chile, whose country, is scheduled to be host for the year 2.020.
