With the support of the Colombian soldiers, the paperos (potato growers) of Santander transported their plantations to participate in the Papatón (mass sale of potato) held in Bucaramanga.
Soldiers of the Fifth Brigade, of the Second Division of the National Army, through the Engineer Battalion Coronel Francisco José de Caldas No. 5, supported about 18 potato growers families of the municipality of Berlin and the municipality of Tona, Santander; they transported the plantation to Bucaramanga, so they could participate in the Papatón organized on December 13th.
In a trucking rig, 450 sacks of potatoes were taken to the capital of Santander, saving the freight costs to the potato growers in this region, who for some time, due to low sales prices, constant frosts and production with intermediaries, had been presenting economic losses, so that, in many cases, their plantations were wasted.
Thanks to the support of the National Army, these families participated in this event led by the Government of Santander, which seeks, in the midst of economic revival, to give participation to the Santander countryside and the opportunity to producers and municipality’s people to market without intermediaries, guaranteeing fresh products and good prices.
