Among the fishing found there were 1 213 kilograms of queen conch, a protected animal.
The Navy of Colombia, in compliance with the Bicentenary Plan of Operations Almirante Padilla, through the ground units and the coast guard, of the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, managed to find 1,831 kgs of illegal fishing inside the boat Gerchard, flag of Dominican Republic, during the operations of sovereignty and sea control in waters of the Caribbean sea.
This result was obtained thanks to the alert call of a group of fishermen who were carrying out fishing activities authorized by the General Maritime Directorate, DIMAR, in waters near the minor island of Serranilla.
With the information provided, it was possible to detect and intercept the ship by the missile frigate ARC Almirante Padilla, a strategic unit that is sent in the framework of Operation Renacer for the reconstruction of the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina.
The frigate ARC Almirante Padilla escorted the boat to San Andrés, where with the support of rapid reaction units –URR-of the San Andrés Coast Guard Station, the respective inspections were carried out by the crew of the Naval institution, identifying inside 31 people of Dominican nationality, who were taken to the dock of the San Andrés Coast Guard Station along with the 1,8 tons of illegal fishing found, to be subsequently distributed and put into custody of officials of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Fisheries of San Andrés and Providencia and the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, Coralina.
The captain of the ship and the seized material, including six outboard engines, predatory fishing equipment, global positioning equipment and telephones, were put into custody of to the Attorney General's Office. In the same way, the 30 persons of Dominican nationality initiated the corresponding administrative sanctioning processes before Migracion Colombia.
