More than 2,200 houses require support, and the Navy will work in 400 of them.
Since the Hurricane Iota in the archipelago, the Colombian Navy has daily contributed with humanitarian assistance in this area of the country.
Thanks to the contribution of the crew, the installation and repair works of 64 houses have been carried out.
Eight ships deployed in the archipelago have transported to Providencia 1,439 tons of cargo, including humanitarian aid, heavy machinery and construction materials.
More than 4,914 tons of solid waste and metal crap have been removed, collected and transported.
Within the framework of the Unified Operation of the State, the phase of massive houses reconstruction on the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina began, which includes the construction of 1,134 new houses and the reconstruction of 1,104. The Colombian Navy will work on the recovery of 400 roofs.
For that mission, the Colombian Navy created a specialized work team made up of more than 230 crew members, under the leadership of Colonel Ricardo Rivera, Commander of the Navy Infantry Logistics Support Command, who arrived in the archipelago to fulfill this important mission.
This was announced by Rear Admiral Hernando Enrique Mattos Dager, Commander of the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, in his most recent visit to Providencia and Santa Catalina, where he said: "the Colombian Navy has restructured and organized new working groups in Providencia to begin the third phase of the Plan Renacer –reconstruction plan-: the massive reconstruction. Our work, from now, will be the rebuild of houses, fixing their roofs, thus contributing to the wellbeing of families and the improvement of the quality of life of the inhabitants of the island”.
In this phase will work in a coordinated manner the National Government, the Mayor of Providence, the National Army, the Colombian Air Force, the National Police, the Financial Territorial Development Institution (FINDETER), the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and the SENA (technical education center), in order to comply with the goals established in the framework of the Plan 100, which aimed the reconstruction of Providencia and Santa Catalina.
“The desire of the National Government is to deliver the inhabitants of Providence and Santa Catalina. We continue with this important phase of massive reconstruction, which will be the key to repair roofs of 1,104 houses hit by the Hurricane Iota, and for the construction of 1,134 new houses”, said Susana Correa, Manager for the Reconstruction of Providence.
The Colombian Navy, through the Caribbean Naval Force and the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, will continue to provide its human talent to support the inhabitants living in Providencia and Santa Catalina. It ratifies its commitment through the interagency operation led by the National Government and the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) to repair and reconstruct those houses.
