Due to the fire that occurred in the Páramo de Santurbán, which caused a negative environmental impact in this nature reserve, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Nicolás Galarza, and the Director of the Risk Management Office of Santander, Cesar Augusto García, accompanied by other environmental authorities and expert biologists, flew over the hit area to check the magnitude of the damage.
Aboard a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter of the Colombian Air Force -which was important in the municipality of Surata to provide support in this emergency- a flyby at about 3,600 meters in height was carried out in the municipality of El Mohán, where it was reported the largest loss because of the flames. There are few small fires to extinguish by the Fire Department of the region.
In the same way, the Unified Command Checkpoint in Suratá determined the reforestation plan of this strategic ecosystem, where inhabit more than 400 types of plants, 200 types of birds and mammals. This Unified Command seeks to protect soil resources, as well as the fauna and flora of the mountainous region.
In coordination with the National Center for Personnel Recovery and the Regional Autonomous Corporation for the Defense of the Plateau in Bucaramanga, the Colombian Air Force maintains works in this area, where it accompany the work to mitigate environmental damage.
