Ratifying their commitment to the preservation of fauna and flora in the South Pacific of Nariño, units of the Colombian Navy recovered and released a Sloth Bear in the municipality of Olaya Herrera, Nariño.
River control operations over the Patía River led to the rescue of this wild animal, which was transported aboard a boat by fishermen in the area, who had apparently hunted it to eat it.
Once the good health of the bear was verified, the Marines, in coordination with the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Nariño, released it in the National Natural Park Sanquianga, a protected area.
In accordance with the National Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Illegal Trafficking of wild Sloths by the Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development, the authorities must protect and prevent its hunting, smuggling and pollution of the environment where they live.
The Colombian Navy, through its maritime components deployed in the south Pacific of Nariño, and in coordination with the environmental authorities, will continue to conduct surveillance, control and search operations in the rivers, sea, coast and protected areas of this region of the country in order to counter the attacks against the environment, biodiversity and natural resources.
