The boat reportedly sailed of last July 5, 2021 at the port of Salinas de Baní, Dominican Republic, bound for a fishing point 35 nautical miles off the Dominican coast.
Fulfilling the mission of safeguarding human life at sea, the Multipurpose Hydrographic Ship ARC Caribe of the Colombian Navy, carried out the rescue of two people of Dominican nationality, approximately 150 nautical miles southeast of the island of Providencia and 628 nautical miles southeast of its port of origin, Salinas de Baní in the Dominican Republic. The crew was drifting for 14 days aboard a boat that would have had malfunctions in its engines.
The rescue operation was carried out on the seas, where the Ship ARC Caribe, was carrying out humanitarian assistance and material transport operations within the framework of the Renacer Plan for the reconstruction of the Archipelago, detected a boat with two people on board amid the difficult climate conditions in the area.
The military personnel immediately rescued the foreign personnel, saving their lives. Aboard the ship, they checked the state of health of the two people, 37 and 50, identified as Wander Feliz Cuevas and Miguel Angel Romero, who had good conditions and were isolated of the crew of the unit to comply with biosecurity protocols to face the COVID-19.
The Dominicans were transported to the ARC Bolívar Naval Base in the city of Cartagena, where they were handed over to the corresponding immigration authorities. The boat that presented mechanical failures could not be recovered due to the difficult sea conditions.
The Colombian Navy reaffirms its commitment to safeguard life at sea, having all its maritime, river, air and land resources to provide timely support for any emergency that endangers human life. In the same way, it invites citizens to make use of safety measures during navigation, remember the use of the life jacket and verify the boats before the sails, carrying the necessary tools to react to mechanical failures.
