Soldiers of the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion No. 3, who are carrying out manual demining work in the Florencia village of Samaná, Caldas, destroyed five anti-personnel mines.
The explosive devices were found by troops in the village Las Mercedes in a dangerous area of 17,847 square meters.
Mr. Alonso Jaramillo, owner of the land where the devices were destroyed, mentioned: "I thank the humanitarian demining for the operation they are doing in the village Las Mercedes, this week they have destroyed five anti-personnel mines, which were found by troops on the edge of a road putting at risk the life, the good physical condition of all the inhabitants of this region, so there are already five mines out of operation, we hope there are no more,; now with the help of the soldiers, God willing, we are going to keep our territory free of anti-personnel mines."
In that part of Caldas, the soldiers of the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion No. 3 have decontaminated more than 260,000 square meters, this was announced by Lieutenant Colonel Andrés Guzmán Fonseca Commander of the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion N. °3, "since 2017, when we started work in this municipality of Samaná Caldas, 269,505 m2 has been set free of suspicion of anti-personnel mines and 96 explosive devices destroyed, all this with a single objective and a single institutional mission, to prevent every day fewer victims suffering of these explosive devices and can recover their territories to travel without fear."
This Demining Unit in the same way works in the department of Santander, where they have decontaminated 596,962 square meters and destroyed 85 explosive devices. Currently, the municipalities of El Playón, Matanza, Rionegro and Suratá are under intervention.
