The risky, but exemplary mission of the soldiers of the Humanitarian Demining Engineers Battalion No. 5 prevented new victims of antipersonnel mines in the departments of Huila and Putumayo.
During the first three months of this year, the mine clearance specialists found ten antipersonnel mines and three unexploded used munitions, which were close to water sources, main access roads to different villages, houses and, most unfortunately, close to the schools where Dozens of boys and girls walk.
The soldiers cleared approximately 63,000 square meters, through which the community can travel freely today. Besides they end the existence of the latent enemy, which put children and adults living in rural areas of Colombia such as Baraya, Tello and Neiva (Huila), Orito and Valle del Guamuez (Putumayo), in danger.
The soldiers continue to work in the municipalities with the firm intention of decontaminating the identified lands.
It is important to emphasize that, in the Huila region, municipalities such as Garzón, Gigante, Suaza, La Plata, Argentina, Isnos, San Agustín, Rivera, Acevedo, Aipe, Íquira and Pitalito, have already been declared free of suspected mines, as well as Santiago and Mocoa, in Putumayo.
